But amidst all of this, we are all gearing up for our Spring Rush! A lot of work has gone into planning all of the events we have lined up (courtesy of our lovely Vice Presidents, Bethany and Melissa).
Why Rush?
It's really nice knowing that there is always someone available who is willing to listen or give advice during the hard times. College gets tough; there are a lot of expectations and commitments! Having a solid support system (that may be separate from your normal friend group) is invaluable.
2. Give back to School of Music and community.
Mu Phi Epsilon is a professional music fraternity whose purpose is to provide service through music. Everyone sees us regularly swiping people in for recital credit, but we do much more than that. There is usually one service event planned a month. Past/regular events include music therapy at hospitals and nursing homes, decorating faculty doors for the holiday season, volunteering at the local Human Society, Operation Christmas Child, donating school supplies, and assisting faculty in small projects.
International conventions take place every three years, and include seminars, performances, and a competition. There are also local district conferences and events at other music conventions such as TMEA in San Antonio. Mu Phi Epsilon also offers scholarships and grants to members. Being a member of a professional organization in general is a great way to learn from other people within your field and establish connections and relationships! To learn more, visit the Mu Phi Epsilon website.
4. We have fun!
While the main purpose of Mu Phi is service, we also do a lot of fun things together. There are annual social events such as Formal and Crush, and regular sisterhood events that have included movie night or craft night. In addition to official events, most of us just enjoy spending time together as friends. There's never a shortage of laughs when we're together (as cheesy as that may sound, it's true!).
FAQs
While there are dues each semester, we try our best to keep them down and reasonable. Our treasurer is able to work with people and meet their needs financially. Especially compared to Greek groups, the cost of being in Mu Phi is minimal!
2. Does it take up a lot of time?
As music students, we are all so busy all the time. It may seem like adding another commitment is impossible or too stressful. However, being a member only demands a one or two per hours per week. Our meetings usually take place on Sunday evenings, and there are a only couple of required events per month (service, fundraiser, etc.). Social events are optional but completely worth it!
3. Is there a lot of drama?
A lot of people assume that within any group of girls, there will be cat-fights or pettiness. The truth is, while anyone will disagree from time to time, we are a family. We all want the best for each other, and because of that, we get along great!
