On Friday, November 9th, I had my Violin BME Recital! Most Music Education majors choose to do their recitals during the spring semester of their Junior year or anytime during their Senior year, but I ended up taking less hours than I planned this semester, so I decided to go ahead and do my recital. Recitals are so stressful, but oh, so worth it! I had family and friends that drove up from Houston to see my recital as well as many friends and professors in the audience. I performed a solid 50 minute performance of The Devil’s Trill by Tartini, Nigun by Bloch, and Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto. Even though it was a near nightmare making sure that all of my pieces were up to par for my recital (on top of all of the schoolwork I was getting), I was extremely calm during the actual recital and it went amazingly well. I cannot describe the relief that streamed through my body during my last few chords of my recital as I realized that I was done with it and there were no major breakdowns or mess-ups. And even though this semester is still insanely busy, I feel good knowing that my recital was a success and I can look back on it and be proud of the work that I did and the performance that I had.
This Saturday, November 10, the Phi Xi chapter was part of Baylor University’s “Steppin’ Out”, a day for organizations to come together and serve the community all together. We were lucky enough to be part of an around 200-person crew working on an extremely run-down house that was to be renovated (starting with our work). The job consisted of moving furniture, stripping paint off of windows, cleaning windows, repainting walls, repainting door and window frames, and many other odd jobs. Our chapter ended up mostly cleaning windows and painting enormous amounts of mahogany stain onto door and window frames. We worked tirelessly and tried not to get too overcome by the fumes (the smell was pretty strong), but ended up with some very interesting looking “freckles” from the stain spattering from our paintbrushes onto our hands, arms, and legs. We definitely got down and dirty and were completely exhausted by the end of the service period, but we transformed a good bit of the house into a much nicer-looking, cleaner home.
