My best memory from when I was a camper was meeting all the people that I am still friends with today. Some of them are students at Baylor now and some are at other schools. I like to look at my old camp concert programs and see who is now at Baylor that I played with during the camps.
This summer, I had the opportunity to be a counselor at Baylor’s Summer Band and Orchestra Camps. I was really excited to be a counselor because I was a camper for three years (’07, ’08, and ’09) and it was one of the reasons that made me want to go to Baylor to study music. It was also the first time I heard about Mu Phi Epsilon! During the week, campers get to have an idea of what it’s like to be a student in the School of Music with rehearsals, master classes, and chamber ensembles. The first week was for high school students and the second week for middle school. The Wind Ensemble during the High School camp played Maslanka’s 4th Symphony, which was a treat to hear after the Baylor Wind Ensemble recorded it in May. Our duties as camp counselors included monitoring the dining halls during all meals, watching them during recreation time, and giving them daily information at hall meetings before lights out. My best memory from when I was a camper was meeting all the people that I am still friends with today. Some of them are students at Baylor now and some are at other schools. They included Brittany Peters (PC 06), Paige Brown (PC 08), Chelsea Sentell (PC 08), Stephanie Jayroe (PC 09), Kate Sutton (PC 09), Abby Yeakle (PC 09), Emily Brandt (PC 10), myself (PC 11), Christine Cookus (PC 12), Liz Hebert (PC 12), and Savana Hughey (PC 12). Our head director for the two weeks was also a Mu Phi, Blair Williams (PC 02). Even my counselor during my last year at camp was a Mu Phi, Casey Knowlton (PC 07)! To say the least, Mu Phi had a great presence during the camp. It was also a great opportunity to spend time with these girls because some of them have graduated and are continuing with grad schools out of state this fall. For the Golden Wave Band, I am the recruiting chair and a drum major so I was also busy with helping out during new student orientations during the weeks of the camps. I helped recruit and sign students up for an audition in the afternoon and then measured them for their uniforms and had them fill out online forms during lunchtime on the next day. It was a great way to meet a lot of the incoming freshmen in marching band and made me even more excited for marching season to begin!
